Manipulated excerpts from Beethoven’s ninth symphony were played back via speakers attached to suspended trumpets and trombones. Referencing the ‘Ear Trumpets’ Beethoven experimented with in attempts to augment his diminished hearing, we inverted the function of these instruments.
Equally interested in investigating perceptual aspects of listening and the ‘listening’ of instruments themselves, we allowed for the instruments to ‘speak’ with their own bodies.
